The 2024 Tom Harris Charity Classic made history by raising an astounding $1 million, with over $400,000 set aside for critical cardiac care equipment at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH).
In partnership with the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation, the funds will go towards purchasing an echocardiography machine, a transesophageal echocardiogram probe, and other essential healthcare tools, enabling the cardiac team to deliver more precise and efficient care.
More than a charity fundraiser
Hosted on June 21, 2024 at Nanaimo Golf Course, this year’s event was more than a golf tournament—it was a celebration of unity, compassion, and the enduring impact of generosity.
The day kicked off with registration and brunch, followed by a shotgun start at noon. Participants enjoyed 18 holes of golf under clear skies, followed by a cocktail reception.
Dinner and a live auction closed out the event in a powerful way. After attendees watched a compelling video showcasing the urgent need for updated cardiology diagnostic equipment, rapid individual donations, combined with funds raised through sponsorships and event entries, made the critical care equipment possible.
Tony Harris, chairperson of the Tom Harris Community Foundation, emphasized the importance of addressing the region’s healthcare needs, stating that the community’s support reflects both the philanthropic spirit of Vancouver Island and the pressing necessity for enhanced medical facilities.
He also highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Fair Care Alliance, an advocacy group supported by the foundation, which is campaigning for a new patient tower and a cardiac catheterization lab at NRGH.
