Nanaimo Hospital Foundation: A Lifeline for Critical Care in Our Community

In a region where every second counts, the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) stands as an essential healthcare hub for the Central and North Island. Yet, as urgent cases arrive (whether airlifted or transported via road over the Malahat) for lifesaving treatment, the facility faces a pressing challenge: Outdated and inadequate critical care units.

A Historic Campaign for Change

Recognizing the urgent need for change, the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation (NHF) launched a historic campaign to raise $5 million for a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This upgrade comes as a response to the community’s demand for better healthcare services and is crucial for addressing the increasing needs of local residents.

Charity of Choice

The Nanaimo Hospital Foundation has supported critical healthcare needs in the community, thanks in part to early leadership from Tom Harris, who served as Past Chairman. Today, NHF remains a charity of choice for the Tom Harris Community Foundation (THCF), which has championed initiatives to enhance local health services.

To date, THCF has donated $539,500 to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) via NHF, with funds supporting the Tom Harris Charity Classic Heart Health Campaign’s drive for advanced cardiac equipment.

These contributions have enabled the acquisition of an Echocardiogram (Echo) Machine with Transesophageal Probe, two Electrocardiogram (ECG) Machines, and Holter scanning systems. Each of these tools is essential for early diagnosis, ongoing monitoring, and effective treatment of cardiac conditions.

These investments in critical technology mean that residents can receive timely, high-quality cardiac care close to home, reducing the need for travel and ensuring that lifesaving resources are accessible when they’re needed most.

The Impact of the New ICU

“This ICU is not just a facility; it’s a lifeline for our community,” says Tony Harris, chairperson of the NHF and founder of the Tom Harris Community Foundation. “Our goal is to ensure that when families need critical care, they can access the best treatment possible right here in Nanaimo.”

The new ICU replaces a facility that experts labeled as the worst in Canada. With 12 modern beds equipped with the latest technology, this upgrade aims to save lives and improve patient outcomes. However, the NHF isn’t stopping there, it has also set its sights on raising an additional $5 million for a High Acuity Unit (HAU), designed to care for patients transitioning from the ICU.

Join Us in Securing a Healthier Future

As construction progresses on these vital upgrades, the NHF invites community members to join in this mission. Donations to the Tom Harris Community Foundation not only support NHF but also have a direct impact on the lives of countless individuals in our community.
